my solution to all of our problems

  • Aug. 9th, 2007 at 1:14 PM

Today Bush voted against a bill which would raise the tax on gasoline.  The funds generated from this bill would go to internal improvements such as strengthening our nations bridges (which is important in light of certain events) and helping New Orleans and other areas ravaged by mother nature recover.  Therefore, I can't understand why Bush is opposed to the bill.  By placing a tax on gas, prices will go up discouraging the purchase of hummers and other huge, gas-guzzling cars.  This will have a two-fold effect: it will decrease our dependence on foreign oil thereby diminishing the control the middle east and its vast oil reserves have on us as well as reducing our nation's output of pollution.  I think almost all of us will admit that everything is not right with the environment and we are at least partially to blame so this would help limit our negative influence.  To me this bill is a clear choice and I believe it could help the United States solve a number of its problems.  It would hurt our oil industry but currently 4 of the 10 most profitable companies in the US are oil companies so I think they can take the hit.  I only wish that Bush would look past the partisan nonsense and campaign contributions and work for the country.

disillusioned voter

So, being a complete political junkie I started looking at the issues of different candidates trying to choose a favorite.  Being that 2008 will be my first voting experience I wanted to make it wonderful and be as informed as possible.  However, as I browsed from site to site I became more and more confused.  Each candidate had a blurb about each issue but didn't necessarily take a stance.  This slightly offended me but what offended me more was the candidates who took a stance saying they supported this or that but gave no explanation as to how they would complete their objective.  Both Barack and Clinton promised to strengthen american families... how exactly are they going to strengthen families? Alien abduction? Brainwashing? Drugs? Ron Paul, my favorite Republican, said that he was against the Iraq War and hadn't voted for it.  Thats all very well and good but how does he intend to get us out of it.  These are supposed to be the smartest people in America, the ones who make decisions that will affect all of us and they seem incapable of coming up with solutions.  I guess I already  knew this was true.  I just had been pinning it on the Bush administration for the past few years.  I am finally coming to realize that my derision may have been misdirected.  Now I find all politicians somewhat repulsive.

In the words of a close friend, I offer the candidates running for the presidency some advice: grow a pair.
