Today Bush voted against a bill which would raise the tax on gasoline. The funds generated from this bill would go to internal improvements such as strengthening our nations bridges (which is important in light of certain events) and helping New Orleans and other areas ravaged by mother nature recover. Therefore, I can't understand why Bush is opposed to the bill. By placing a tax on gas, prices will go up discouraging the purchase of hummers and other huge, gas-guzzling cars. This will have a two-fold effect: it will decrease our dependence on foreign oil thereby diminishing the control the middle east and its vast oil reserves have on us as well as reducing our nation's output of pollution. I think almost all of us will admit that everything is not right with the environment and we are at least partially to blame so this would help limit our negative influence. To me this bill is a clear choice and I believe it could help the United States solve a number of its problems. It would hurt our oil industry but currently 4 of the 10 most profitable companies in the US are oil companies so I think they can take the hit. I only wish that Bush would look past the partisan nonsense and campaign contributions and work for the country.
